The 7 deadly sins
Here are my 7 deadly sins of blogging:
There are two things I value the most from the blogs I read.
Authenticity
They say we should dance like nobody is watching, we should blog like nobody's reading.
Humility
They say we should dress like the whole world is looking, we should blog like the whole world is reading.
Lust, to covet those page views, Google page rank and Technorati rating
Gluttony, to join every online community on the planet
Greed, to believe Adsense will make us all millionaires
Sloth, to be too lazy to acknowledge a comment on our blogs
Wrath, to be really angry when some insanely vanilla blog post gets a million views from Digg and our own award winning post gets a hundred
Envy, to dream of becoming an A-lister
Pride, to believe our blog is the de facto authority on all things
There are two things I value the most from the blogs I read.
Authenticity
They say we should dance like nobody is watching, we should blog like nobody's reading.
Humility
They say we should dress like the whole world is looking, we should blog like the whole world is reading.

Oh dear. I dress like no one is looking. I think I may pretend to have not read that sentence.
But I like, very much, the rest of this post.
And I'm guilty.
<lol>
I have precisely the same problem!
I think we can share a cell together!

This is a great piece Vern. I think lust is my main vice - and do you know it's those times when I'm most covetous that I enjoy blogging the least. I try to shake it off by focusing back on my readers - and on the wonderful, amazing people that populate this place called the blogosphere.
As for your last points - if you've got a magic formula for balancing authenticity and humility, you're welcome to come and blog about it at Confident Writing any time!

I like this! Although, I am guilty of Lust and Greed though......mildly. And Sloth too sometimes.
Although, I find that I feel so 'responsible' towards those regular readers that I 'sin' less these days. I also used to do a lot of PayPerPost but have done hardly any now because I can't find any topics that I can comfortably integrate into my blog.
Thanks Joanna, a lot of what I write is what I strive for, not what I've achieved :)
So I'm very much a work in progress.
There's already a lot of magic happening at Confident Writing! I know, because a lot rubs off on me when I visit!

Amanda, I know what you mean. I'm often tempted to start a new blog with just technical stuff and another one that's just plain goofy to keep it less eclectic.
I do admire the 'professionals' who seem to be able to do it with such high quality and consistently. But as you and I know, there's a lot of work and dedication behind it.
I feel if I tried to keep up at that pace, it would become a job, a chore and an obligation. My heart would then leave the building.
Vern
Its true, I don't know if I would call them "deadly" though :P
